Known for his political activism, he was a founding member of the Concerned Artists of the Philippines and a co-founder of the activist group Kaisahan. Widely recognized for his social realist works, he was a recipient of the Cultural Center of the Philippines Thirteen Artists Award (1990) and was awarded the Parangal Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan from the City of Manila (2006).
