During my travels I draw and paint
things that symbolize the places I visit. And the Casa Manila Museum in
Intramuros, Manila has a deep history during the Spanish era.
This door knocker in front of the old door of
the house caught my eye. One of the Spanish rules in the Philippines is the
Antillean style of architecture. Antillean architecture was introduced to the
world by the Spaniards, who arrived in 1571.
To enter the house, an
"ANTILLEAN DOOR KNOCKER" - can be used to inform the servants that
someone is outside.
Wealthier Greeks had slaves to open
the front door. The slave was attached to the door by a chain which ran through
a heavy metal ring that was securely fastened to a back plate on the door. Over
time, the metal ring became a handle which was used to knock the back plate.
Hence the door knocker was born. The first knockers were developed in the 11
the century which was later on adopted by many western countries. The
11th-century door knocker has a beautifully crafted with heavy cast designs. It
consists of a large ring with a back plate embossed with a lion's head holding
the ring in its mouth.
Door knockers have a bit of a dark
past, with the earliest thought to originate from Ancient Greece where slaves
were chained to a heavy ring attached to the door in order to welcome any
guests. In the event the slave had fallen asleep, the guest would tap the
knocker to raise the attention of the home owner.
Throughout history, door-knockers
have been imbued with various symbolic meanings, such as protection, good luck,
and social status. The lion's head door knocker, symbolizing strength and
courage, is one of the most iconic designs.
