"I'm promoting Arts and Culture in the Philippines."
INTERVIEW: Junel Tomaroy HEALING ARTIST OF SIQUIJOR
“Anything and everything has its own beauty and value.”
Siquijor famous for:
-It is recognized as a center of mystic power and a capital of mystic activities and white magic.
"Real face of Siquijor"
Agimat and Gayuma
The Spaniards called the island Isla del Fuego ("Island of Fire"), because the island gave off an eerie glow, from the great swarms of fireflies that lived in the numerous molave trees on the island. Prior to colonization, Siquijor was home to the Kedatuan of Katugasan, named after the tugas, the molave trees which abounded the island. The native dwellers of the island used these trees to build posts (haligi) for their houses because of their strength and durability that could withstand strong typhoons and monsoons. Most of the patriarchs of the island used the tugas to make a wooden plow (tukod) to cultivate the rocky soil for farming using mainly male cattle (toro) to pull it through the sticky and hard rocky soil. However, before the discovery of using tugas as the foundations of their houses, the island natives dwelt in caves as shown by the pottery and old tools like stone grinder excavated from the three caves of Sam-ang.
In the heart of Siquijor province in the southern Philippines lies mananambal, the healers, who have kept this heritage alive for generations. the healing artist of Siquijor Junel Tomaroy, stands as a serene sanctuary, offering solace to patients seeking traditional folk remedies.
HEALERS HEAD
The beauty of the 14th Tam-Awan international arts festival is that you get to meet our artists from all over the Philippines, storytellers who have unique stories about their traditions and origins. And here I met our fellow artist Junel who is a healing artist from Siquijor. His ability and knowledge to heal comes from his ancestors that until now he continues to do it to help others. This is the right time and time to recognize the face of Siquijor through him as most people know that he is surrounded by many wonders. That it is not only infested by witches or Mangba-barangs. Or, any evil elements that are not understood in modern times.
It is also a fact of our culture and history that our source of food and medicine is still dependent on our mother nature. We talked a lot and also to better understand their culture. A part in this vlog is how they also make their antidotes against bad elements. And part of my documenting in this vlog is to see more the depth of cultural wealth that we have.
You can fully understand a place not only by the covered masks that are there, but see more depth to be attracted to the true beauty of siquijor and those around it.
that the town of Siquijor has a "real face to treat or treat people who are sick." even psychological, physical and spiritual human needs.
Siquijor is known for the famous Agimat and Gayuma. In spite of this, Siquijor offers incredible sites and sights and is rapidly becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines. Siquijor is known throughout the country for its unique healing arts.
“It is recognized as a center of mystic power and a capital of mystic activities and white magic.”
The remote island of Siquijor is unique – not only in the Philippines, but the whole of South East Asia, renowned since ancient times as a centre of witchcraft, magic and folk healing.
Siquijor is known for its magical and mystic stories surrounding the island. There are hundreds of shamans or 'healers' which inhabit the island, for which it has gained the most attention.
But more than that, it's also popular for its many pristine beaches, beautiful waterfalls, and historic sites. Just like we know from what we watch in the cinema that the potion is mixed with food and drink to attract the one you want to mate with and find love.
“Gayuma“is a love potion that is used to attract a mate. -The potion's magical property is said to work best when taken by the potential partner, often mixed in a drink.
-There is also a potion that is smelled
"Gayuma / Potion"
But in Siquijor it's wrong, they don't drink or smell the potion, it's not just attractive or you can find a match and love.
But, this is also good luck for them. It brings the others mixed with perfume. Its correct use is smeared or placed on the side of the lips, and eyes. The potion is mixed with the perfume.
The Advantage: The potion is business luck placed in the cash box. It can be taken when taking an exam interview or dating.
His Disadvantage: Not allowed to be taken to the cemetery, and sensitive to the dead - wake or mourn the dead. Because in the cemetery there are so many clinging plants absorbing sadness.
"If you don't use it, you can also put it on the altar."
The ingredients contained in the potion are based only on its properties and the luck it brings to the person. Which can be found in plants and trees that can only be found in mountains, caves and oceans.
"PO-LAW" my artist name, "Po-law" is a hot ember that remains overnight. used by our ancestors in preparation using hard woods.
Junel said: "Habak" is one of the things we use in treatment. we wear it as an antidote to witchcraft.
“All the herbs they need are there in the forest, so we preserve it, we do not ruin it. Traditional practices and beliefs encourage respectful and sustainable harvest of medicinal plants.
When I was little, I witnessed the characteristics of healers, they also do rituals that can ward off bad luck in our lives and pray for our departed. This is a culture that I grew up with in the Philippines. I have seen a potion that looks like peanuts that is put in drinks or food and there is also something that looks like a liquid that is rubbed on. but all that still comes from nature. Nature is very important for us as we source our livelihood from what we eat and medicine.
And also, home to insects and animals that can only be found in the Philippines. an ability and knowledge that continues to be practiced in the present time in the traditions that are the heritage of our race.
Traditional practices and beliefs are sustained in the harvesting of medicinal plants.” and it also encourages respect for our ancestors. And balancing our source of needs from mother nature.
It has been a part of our lifestyle and culture even before the arrival of the Spaniards.
Let's not forget the views and beliefs that our ancestors still do so let's love art and culture because this is the wealth we have. that we also have our own identity.
