In Memoriam tribute to Sir Egai

Edgar Talusan "EGAI" Fernandez (b. 1955-2024) was a social realist painter whose works often portray the country’s sociopolitical issues. Known for his political activism, he was a founding member of the Concerned Artists of the Philippines and a co-founder of the activist group Kaisahan. Widely recognized for his social realist works, he was a recipient of the Cultural Center of the Philippines Thirteen Artists Award (1990) and was awarded the Parangal Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan from the City of Manila (2006).

Egai’s body of work, especially from the years of dictatorship until the 1986 EDSA Revolution, bear the textures of the streets, the lushness of forests, and the colors of hope. They are bathed in the hues of country and flag. These artworks do not shock, shout, or harangue. Egai’s works whisper and caress, displaying resistance in quiet dignity.

"EGAI" was a Filipino socialist-realist painter. His art style was noted for portraying the Philippines as "a multi-ethnic country that is still embroiled in social issues such as civil conflicts." Active in the Philippine art scene from the 1970s onwards, he was particularly known for his activist art which criticized the dictatorship of former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos.

“I learned a lot from the tribal communities, but I am not part of them, in a way. So, I just tried to paint the experience of my family, community and social issues around me.”
“I became more politically aware after I learned my friends were tortured and put in jail.”

Art practice is not just painting for money or to be well known. Primarily it is a passion to practice the language of your heart that seeks the truth around or within us. To seek justice and peace, to say no to violence and to learn to love others is what I want to portray in my art works.

I think I’m lucky in a sense that we are witnessing a lot of changes and moving into a time when people are looking into their spirituality. Seeking a better life and work for positive things for the society.
