Art Camp Philippines Launches First Painting Competition at Manila Port

Manila, Philippines – Art Camp Philippines proudly launched its first-ever painting competition, “Harbor Heritage: Painting the Soul of the Port,”
in partnership with the Bureau of Quarantine (BOQ).
Spearheaded by Dr. Cesar Hilario L. Anastacio Jr., MD, MPH, this initiative brought vibrant art into one of the busiest corners of the city, proving that creativity can thrive even amidst the rhythm of daily port life.

The historic “Harbor of Heritage: Painting the Soul of the Port” was made possible through the vision and initiative of Dr. Cesar Hilario L. Anastacio Jr., MD, MPH, an active member of Art Camp Philippines. Recognizing the potential to bring art into unconventional public spaces, Dr. Anastacio championed the idea of hosting the first on-the-spot painting competition and live sketching session inside the restricted area of Manila Port.

His leadership and dedication bridged the worlds of public service and creative expression, inviting artists to capture the vibrant stories of the port while honoring the vital work of BOQ frontliners who safeguard incoming vessels and passengers. Dr. Anastacio’s initiative exemplifies how passion, commitment, and cultural advocacy can transform even the busiest corners of the city into spaces where heritage, history, and artistry converge.

Vessel L/Q Jaime

The event centered around the blessing of the vessel L/Q Jaime, a boat that has long served frontliners and doctors in welcoming incoming ships and ensuring the health and safety of passengers, reflecting the BOQ’s dedication under the Philippine Port Authority. By featuring L/Q Jaime in the painting competition, artists captured not only its structure but the rich stories it carries — a symbol of vigilance, care, and community service.

The competition drew talented artists who translated the port’s history, heritage, and maritime culture into striking works of art.
