KNEELING
CARABAO FESTIVAL 2024
Travel Tips:
In the places we go to, it's better to have acquaintances.
So that we can
better understand their history and culture.
HISTORY ARTS AND CULTURE IN PULILAN
And one is Roland Cruz, who is a legitimate resident of Bulacan. that we are lucky to be able to host and interview him about the history of their art and culture of Pulilan. I have also interviewed him at his Campfolkswagen Museum in Baguio.
KUYA
JESS- How did the buffalo parade start here in the Pulilan? Roland - First of
all let's prioritize the condition and topography of the Pulilan? Pulilan was
an agricultural town back in the day! when I remember when I was little, we had
13 rice mills not a single one was left. Farms are changing and disappearing in
Pulilan.
ROLAND - How did the carabao parade begin? San Isidro Labrador is the patron saint of farmers. During martial law the owners of the farms were villagers. Our social society was feudal. During the festival, the farmers of the land are obliged to cook for the rich people in the town PoblaciΓ³n.
The main transportation was the buffalo with a cart. After that, the buffalo will pull the riders of their relatives and cooking utensils and they will go to town. And sometimes they come at the same time. with a long line of carts. long line of carts pulled by buffalo.
And when they think before going to their bosses, they first park along the poblacion. And that's when the buffalo parade started. What we cannot determine is who was the first carabao to kneel? who knelt in front of the church. Because we are different there are also parades like in nueva ecija. there is also a buffalo parade in Lucban, Quezon that has the same patron as San Isidro Labrador.
The only exception to ours is the carabao kneeling in
front of the church. That's what's unique about our festival celebration.
ROLAND -
That's why no one can say who was the first to make the buffalo kneel. all
buffaloes are taught to kneel. it seems that the buffalo is difficult to teach
because of its size. When the holy pope came here to Roxas Boulevard, they
borrowed 20 carabao's from the farm of Pulilan. when the pope came the
buffaloes knelt down.
So, they
are used to kneeling. It is said that the buffalo is a gigantic animal that is
scary but follows the youngest son of the farmer. one of the youngest of the
farmer's family, he is the one who takes where the buffalo is fed. Even the
child is respected by the buffalo. That's how the buffalo parade started!
Since the
advent of industrialization although machinery has been used. that there are
only a few buffaloes that have been replaced by machinery. We have a parade
where the buffalo is almost too small. So, this is what we are fighting for!
Which we knew was wrong so we changed it. There is a time when many people in Pulilan see that the image of San Isidro.
And why is it supposed to be a buffalo instead of a cow? It must be a cow because the san isidro labrador is a cow in spain, there is nothing like buffalo in spain. Here in Pulilan in San Isidro the image is a buffalo.
After six years we started painting or coloring the buffalo in the 1st Bulacan Art Festival. We introduced to color the buffaloes, but in the very first tradition he was not really dyed, but shaved with a geometric design.
KUYA JESS - Here in Pulilan, there are 3
designs you can see in the buffalo parade.
KUYA JESS
- The First one is the shaving of the buffalo fur with a geometric design.
Second is the coloring and painting of designs on the skin. The Third, is the
dressing of the buffalo.
KUYA JESS
- when did the buffaloes start coloring?
ROLAND - The coloring of the buffalo started during the 1st Bulacan Art Festival in 2004.
KUYA JESS
- when did the shaving start?
ROLAND -
the shaving of the buffalo skin is an earlier tradition that is decorated with
geometric designs.
ROLAND - Back in the day, there wasn't even a fire station. only now there were
firefighters, obligatory because of the local government. Our tradition in the
buffalo parade We don't mind poops on the road after the parade.
The heavy downpour is what cleans the dirt on the road. now it's the fireman who cleans up! Because now it's not raining anymore and it's not so strong. We also have parades where the buffaloes are happy because it's raining.
As thanks after planting in the month of May. And along with the parade, the rich harvest hanging on the carts are taken by the people, you don't take it home. that's included in the offering!
As a thank you because after the month of May, it is planted and water is needed. That's why you paraded! It was renamed as Pulilan, which was derived from the word “Pulo ng ilan” meaning cluster of isles.
